1 After outlining the major forms and the figures, a pale wash of Ultramarine Blue was painted across the sky, the distant mountain and over all the shaded areas. This established the general pattern of light and shade.

2 A mid-tone bluey green mix was made from the yellow and blue for the far mountain and I warmed and deepened the hue for the close mountainside. With a touch of Ruby Red, the mix was turned to brown and cooled and deepened for the shadows on the foreground rocks. The pink tint for the boy’s T-shirt sets up the near opposite contrast with the greens and blues.
